America Nova – An Evening of A Cappella Music inspired by American Culture

Ireland’s premier contemporary a cappella ensemble and An Táin Arts Centre’s vocal ensemble in residence bring their America Nova programme to Dundalk. Featuring music that has been influenced by, or has directly influenced, American culture over the past century.

This beautiful concert features the debut solo performance of the Ardú Apprentices – seven of the most talented ensemble students from Dundalk Institute of Technology – who have been working with Ardú throughout the year.

Accompanied on piano by Brian Connor of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra, the wide-ranging repertoire includes well known music by the likes of Billy Joel, Ben E King and Jeff Buckley, all arranged for Ardú’s unique sound.

Ardú Vocal Ensemble is one of Ireland’s premier vocal groups. Established in 2013, Ardú have pioneered the genre of modern a cappella in Ireland, performing to sold out audiences at venues such as Hugh Lane Gallery, National Maritime Museum, The Button Factory, Freemasons’ Hall and Unitarian Chuch. Ardú have also performed at the London A Cappella Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2015 Ardú released their debut full-length album which has recieved airplay on RTÉ Lyric FM and BBC Radio Radio Ulster as well as international playlists. 2016 Saw the launch of Ireland’s A Cappella Competition, devised by Ciarán Kelly and hosted by Ardú. 2017 sees Ardú take up a position of artists in residence at An Táin Theatre, Co. Louth.

Ardú Apprentices will comprise of some of the finest young singers currently studying at DKIT in Dundalk. They will perform at several concerts with Ardú throughout 2017 as part of Ardú’s residency at An Táin Theatre, giving the young singers a true experience of professional singing and an opportunity to showcase their talents nationwide.

CAR BOOT SALE IN AID OF Rape Crisis North East – 14th May

Rape Crisis North East is inviting you to come along to their Car Boot Sale on Sunday 14th May, 2017 in McEvoy’s Car Park, Bachelor’s Walk entrance, Dundalk.

Admission for buyers is €2.00 per person, free entry for children attending with parents.  Organised by Rape Crisis North East, the event takes place from 10:00am to 4:00pm and sellers with their cars can set-up from 8:30am at a fee of €10.00 per car and €15.00 per van.

This is a great opportunity to sell on some of your used equipment and bits and pieces and perhaps purchase some other much needed items.

Rape Crisis North East Flag Day – 11th May

Rape Crisis North East will be holding their annual Flag Day on Thursday the 11th of May 2017. We will be in various locations around Dundalk, and we are seeking your help in raising awareness and much needed funding for our counselling & support services.

Darkness into Light – 6th May – 3 am

Darkness into Light is taking place in Dundalk next Saturday May 6th, starting at 3am.

SOSAD are in need of volunteer stewards to man the route.

You will be picked up at DkIT at 3am and brought back around 5.30am.

Dundalk Lions Club table quiz 19th May

Dundalk Lions Club are holding their annual table quiz in Kennedys Bar on Friday the 19th of May at 9 pm.  The cost is 20 euro for a table of four.

All are welcome to attend and this is always an enjoyable night.

The proceeds go towards the Senior Citizens weekend away which is organised by the Lions Club in September.

 

Volunteers needed as Cycle Against Suicide visits Dundalk – 23rd April

Over 800 people die by suicide on the island of Ireland each year. That is 800 families and communities devastated; 800 lives cut short. Cycle Against Suicide aims to affect change by beginning a conversation about mental health; spreading the message that ‘It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help’ into schools, businesses and communities throughout the island of Ireland.

FIGHTING BLINDNESS HOST FREE INFORMATION EVENING IN DUNDALK

Where: Oriel Centre Dundalk Gaol, Carrickmacross Rd, Dundalk, Co Louth

When: Thursday, March 23, 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Irish patient-led charity Fighting Blindness will host a public information evening in Dundalk for people and families affected by vision loss. The event will focus on age-related macular degeneration and diabetes-related sight loss as well as rare genetic conditions that cause severe vision impairment, such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease, cone-rod dystrophies and many others.
