Olympic cycling track for Dundalk

The 250m Olympic track would be the first of its kind in the country and could be ready for use in September.

With top track cyclists, including current world champion Martyn Irvine, forced to train abroad for large chunks of the year, the Dundalk velodrome will be a huge boost to the sport both locally and nationally.

Cuchulainn Cycling Club recently lodged a planning application with Dundalk Town Council to develop an outdoor track in Muirhevnamor Park, but the project took an exciting twist when an indoor facility became available. FUN RUN AND WALK IN AID OF REHABCARE – 22nd February

Peter Fitzpatrick is calling on local people to  take part in Fitzer’s 5km Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, February 22, in aid of Rehabcare.

Peter is hoping that at least 500 runners and walkers will line-up for this year’s fun run. ‘ The timing for this year’s couldn’t be better as it comes at the end of Operation Transformation and I have already been contacted by clubs and groups in Louth, Meath and Monaghan interested in taking part.’

OVER 10,500 UNWANTED DOGS WERE VOLUNTARILY HANDED OVER TO POUNDS LAST YEAR

Latest Government figures released from the *Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, reveal the shocking statistic that out of the 17,477 dogs and puppies that entered the pound system last year, 10,574 were voluntarily handed over by their owners as no longer wanted. That’s almost 29 dogs per day.

Dogs Trust Executive Director, Mark Beazley explains:

“When a dog is picked up by a dog warden and enters the pound system as a stray, the pound has a legal obligation to keep the dog for 5 days in case the owner comes forward looking for their pet.

Unwanted Christmas gifts can make the world of difference in 2014

Oxfam Ireland is calling on the people of Dundalk to donate unwanted Christmas gifts and make a world a difference to people living in extreme poverty in 2014.

The charity shop, located on Clanbrassil Street, is in critical need of donations to raise funds for its work around the world, including the ongoing emergency response in areas left devastated by the Philippines typhoon.

Retailers to be extra vigilant during the Christmas and New Year period

ISME, the Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association, has warned retailers to be extra vigilant during the Christmas and New Year period as they are being targeted by organised gangs of shoplifters. The Association outlined that retailers are twice as likely to be victims of shoplifting over the Christmas, as the level of crime rises due to the greater opportunity and the recession.
